NSW Koala Strategy: 20 out of 24 actions complete or in progress

The NSW Koala Strategy, released on May 2019, is the beginning of a long-term vision to stabilise, then increase, koala numbers across the state. It sets out a wide range of actions that will help to protect koalas and many other species sharing a unique landscape, NSW Koala Country.

After the first year of implementation, 20 out of the 24 actions planned under the NSW Koala Strategy are already complete or in progress.

Some of the main achievements include:

  • About 7,000 hectares of priority koala habitat permanently protected.
  • 13 workshops held across New South Wales to develop local actions with the community.
  • Over 9 km of koala fencing installed on Picton Road, near Wollondilly.
  • 10 research grants awarded to address key knowledge gaps.

While there are many great initiatives underway, there are even more to come. Keep visiting NSW Koala Country to stay up to date with all the future opportunities created by the NSW Koala Strategy and the Saving our Species program to get involved in koala conservation.
