Koala Smart launched with all-new content

The 2020 Koala Smart Program educates NSW primary and secondary school students about threats to koalas.

Koala Smart is a Lions Club project, launched in 2019 in Port Macquarie and Kempsey. It empowers students to develop local initiatives to protect koalas.

Funding and support from Saving our Species and the NSW Koala Strategy have helped develop brand new program content.

The project is now aligned with the NSW school curriculum and is available to schools across Australia.

The program encourages kids to ask “What will I do to save the koala?”.

Classes then come up with ideas to address some of the key threats to koalas.

Schools can then test their ideas with koala experts through the Saving our Species program.

Teachers and kids are also encouraged to reach out to local experts and community members to help them put their ideas into action.

The ideas that are considered by experts to be feasible and effective will be put into action by the school with the help of their local Lions Club – taking koala conservation from idea to action.
